He drove all the way past the last house in the village, right to where the deep forest began. In the car, he only had a bottle of rum and fishing gear. He didn't really need anything else for living. His weekend hideaway was almost invisible in the early evening like this. He opened up the house to get a view of the stream and lit the fireplace. Sometimes he brought women here for the weekend. Other times, like today, he wanted to be alone and have some peace. He had a shot and was getting ready to go to sleep. Tomorrow meant getting up early. When he turned off the lights, he looked out into the forest, and six shiny eyes looked back at him. In the darkness, he made out the silhouettes of three deer. They came here often. So much food, he thought as he looked at them. But no, tomorrow is about fish.
We are designing a house that is half outside, half inside, and can be opened on all sides so that the forest, stream, and clearing come right in. A subtle steel structure, raw brick paving, a concrete fireplace, and a grid of wooden slats. Minimal utility and raw materials meet the luxury of large glazed surfaces; heating with the fireplace is both a necessity and a privilege.
"We let ourselves be carried by what each place and building calls for through its purpose."
